Sword Art Online watch order (release / story order)
- Sword Art Online (2012) — Episodes 1–25. Covers the Aincrad and Fairy Dance arcs. The Aincrad half is also available as the Progressive films (see below) if you prefer a slower, more detailed retelling.
- Sword Art Online: Extra Edition (2013) — a recap special with a short original Fairy Dance epilogue. Optional; skippable if you are short on time.
- Sword Art Online II (2014) — Episodes 1–24. The Phantom Bullet, Calibur and Mother’s Rosario arcs.
- Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale (2017) — the first theatrical film. It is canon and best watched after Season 2.
- Sword Art Online: Alicization (2018–2019) — Episodes 1–24. The first half of the Alicization arc.
- Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld (2019–2020) — the concluding 23 episodes of the Alicization arc and the end of the main anime so far.
The Progressive films (alternative starting point)
