A stage franchise that keeps growing

The Blue Lock stage adaptation has been remarkably consistent: the first play ran in May 2023 in Osaka and Tokyo, the second in January 2024 in Kyoto and Tokyo, the third in February 2025 in Osaka and Tokyo, and the fourth finished its Tokyo and Osaka run in May 2025. This fifth installment is the first to tackle the Neo Egoist League arc — the same storyline set to anchor the TV anime’s third season, which was confirmed under the title BLUE LOCK: Neo Egoist League.

The franchise

Blue Lock is written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, serialised in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. Studio 8bit animated the first TV season, which premiered in October 2022 and ran 24 episodes. The franchise has since expanded with the Blue Lock: Episode Nagi film, which opened in April, and a second TV season that aired from October to December. Kodansha licenses the manga in English and Crunchyroll streams the anime.

The premise: Japan’s desire for World Cup glory leads its football association to launch a brutal training program to find the national team’s next elite striker, pitting 300 high schoolers against each other so that only one emerges. The concept’s focus on individual “egoist” ambition over teamwork has made it one of the most talked-about sports series of the decade, and the stage adaptations — built around choreographed “matches” and projection-heavy staging — have become a fixture of the 2.5D theatre scene.
