The New Denpa Men, the most recent entry in Genius Sorority’s quirky Denpa Men series, will end all online services on December 7. The developer announced that sales of the in‑game Jewel currency and other paid items stopped on Tuesday, and the official website now outlines how players can claim refunds for any remaining balance.
First launched as a timed exclusive for the Nintendo Switch in July 2024, the title received a follow‑up release for the Switch 2 on April 5. The game’s storefront on Nintendo’s official site can be found here. It built on the series’ core mechanic of using a smartphone‑style camera to locate and capture Denpa Men in the player’s surroundings, then assembling them into parties to explore dungeons.
The Denpa Men franchise began in February 2012 when Genius Sorority released the original The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan. Nintendo later localized the title for North America and Europe, and the series expanded with three more 3DS installments, two of which – The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves and The Denpa Men 3: The Rise of Digitoll – also saw Western releases. In July 2014, the series’ first free‑to‑play entry, Denpa Men RPG Free!, arrived in Japan, and all four 3DS titles were eventually released digitally.
Branching out to mobile platforms, Genius Sorority introduced a smartphone version in February 2017. The move was covered by Anime News Network, noting the series’ shift toward on‑the‑go play. The mobile game allowed players to scan their real‑world environment with their phone’s camera to discover hidden Denpa Men, a feature that carried over to the later console releases.
For fans following the latest Switch entry, the shutdown notice also referenced the earlier July‑22 launch announcement, which detailed the game’s exclusive debut on Nintendo’s hardware. That announcement is archived on Anime News Network. The same outlet provides a company profile for Nintendo, the platform holder, here.
According to the official site, players who have purchased Jewel currency or other microtransactions after the service halt will be eligible for refunds. Detailed instructions and a deadline for submitting refund requests are posted on the game’s news page here. The company emphasized that only unused balances will be returned, and that the process may take several weeks to complete.
The closure marks the end of a decade‑long run for the Denpa Men brand, which has cultivated a niche but devoted fanbase thanks to its blend of AR‑style capture mechanics and light‑hearted RPG elements. While the series has never achieved mainstream blockbuster status, its unique premise has inspired a number of spin‑offs and occasional crossover content across Nintendo’s ecosystem.
Genius Sorority has not announced any immediate plans for a successor title, leaving the future of the Denpa Men universe uncertain. Fans will have to wait for an official statement to learn whether the franchise will be revived on newer hardware or perhaps return to mobile platforms.
