Switch 2 Ocarina of Time Remake Unveils Hall of Fallen Foes and New Features

Today Nintendo streamed the first overview trailer for the upcoming Switch 2 remake of the classic 1998 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The short video highlights a brand‑new area called the Hall of Fallen Foes, where statues of defeated enemies line the walls and players can summon past bosses for a fresh showdown.

According to the official announcement, the remake is set to launch on November 5. Alongside the visual overhaul, Nintendo is adding a suite of quality‑of‑life upgrades that were missing from the original Nintendo 64 title.

Control Overhaul and New Gameplay Options

The Switch 2 version introduces traditional third‑person camera controls, a dedicated jump button, and a roll‑dash action that lets Link evade attacks more fluidly. Players can assign a frequently‑used item to the ZR button and swap between gear on the fly via a pop‑up menu. A fresh Threads of Time menu provides a concise recap of story progress and highlights the next objective, helping newcomers keep pace with the epic narrative.

Time now passes in the game’s towns, creating a more dynamic world. The console’s built‑in microphone can be used to hum melodies directly in‑game, and a purchasable ocarina accessory will allow authentic instrument play. Additional dialogue has been added throughout, enriching character interactions.

App Integration and In‑Game Economy

The remake works hand‑in‑hand with the Zelda Notes function in the Nintendo Switch App. Players can view a summary of their progress, complete “Gossip Quests” that act as scavenger hunts for points, and exchange those points for new ocarina music scores. Those scores feed directly into the app’s Play Ocarina feature.

For the trivia‑loving crowd, the app also houses an Ocarina of Time Quiz containing over 2,000 questions. Rupees earned in the app can be transferred into the game, and vice‑versa, blurring the line between console and mobile experiences.

Collectibles, Amiibo and Anniversary Hardware

In line with Nintendo’s tradition of tying physical collectibles to in‑game rewards, two new amiibo figures—Young Link and Young Zelda—are slated for release in 2027. Scanning either figure will unlock a themed mask for the corresponding character.

To celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary, a limited‑edition Switch 2 console, matching Pro Controller, and carrying case will ship on October 29. The set features exclusive branding and is aimed at both longtime fans and newcomers.

Legacy of Ocarina of Time

The original The Legend of Zelda debuted on Nintendo 64 in November 1998, marking the series’ first foray into true 3‑D graphics. Since then, it has been re‑released on multiple platforms, including two GameCube collection discs, the Wii Virtual Console, and the Nintendo Switch’s Classics app. A full‑screen 3DS remaster titled Ocarina of Time 3D arrived in June 2011, and one of the GameCube discs featured the alternate Master Quest dungeon, a nod to the unreleased Nintendo 64DD version.

The title also inspired a manga adaptation by Akira Himekawa in 2000, later licensed in English by Viz Media. The graphic novel retells Link’s quest to stop Ganondorf, adding visual flair that complements the game’s iconic storytelling.

Live‑Action Film Update

While the remake is the primary focus, fans of the franchise’s upcoming live‑action adaptation may note a recent schedule shift. The film, which has no subtitle unlike previous Zelda movies, is now set to open on April 30, 2027, a week earlier than its previously announced May 7 date. The May 7 release itself had been a delay from the original March 26 target, as reported by Anime News Network and later confirmed in a June 2025 update.

These timeline adjustments underscore Nintendo’s broader strategy of synchronizing major releases across media, ensuring that the Switch 2 remake, anniversary hardware, and the film each receive ample spotlight.
