Ani-One Asia announced that it will stream the new anime adaptation of CLAMP’s Magic Knight Rayearth in October, confirming a regional home for one of the most anticipated revivals of the Fall 2026 season. The series debuts in Japan on October 7.
The story
While on a school field trip to Tokyo Tower, three eighth-graders — Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji — are suddenly summoned to another world called Cephiro. There they learn that Princess Emeraude, whose prayers alone sustain the peace and order of Cephiro, has been taken captive, throwing the world into chaos. Emeraude has called the girls to become the legendary Magic Knights, awaken the sentient mecha-guardians known as the Rune-Gods (Mashin), and save both the princess and the land. Newcomers should know only that the original story is famous for a first-arc revelation that recontextualises the entire quest; how this version handles that turn is the single biggest question for returning fans.

The announced cast includes Ayane Sakura, Rumi Okubo, Rie Takahashi, Saori Hayami, Yuki Ono, Mika Kikuchi, Yuki Kaji, Emiri Kato and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka — a lineup stacked with current A-list voice talent.

Yuki Kajiura‘s involvement is the headline for many longtime fans. She composed the music for the original three-episode Rayearth OVA in 1997, one of her earliest anime credits, in a career that went on to include .hack//Sign, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle (another CLAMP work), Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sword Art Online, Fate/stay night and the Demon Slayer films. Her return closes a loop that has been open for nearly three decades. E&H production, the animation studio, is a younger house that has drawn attention for its work on Ninja Kamui.
Franchise history
The creative collective CLAMP serialised Magic Knight Rayearth in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 1993 to 1996 across six volumes. It arrived as CLAMP was pivoting toward mainstream shojo after their doujinshi and early-work origins, and it became one of their defining hits alongside Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits and xxxHOLiC.
The manga inspired two TV anime seasons produced by TMS Entertainment: the first ran from October 1994 to March 1995 (adapting the Cephiro arc), and Magic Knight Rayearth 2 ran from April to November 1995 (an anime-original continuation in which three invading nations besiege Cephiro). A three-episode 1997 OVA, simply titled Rayearth, told a completely alternate version of the story set in modern Tokyo. The franchise also produced a well-regarded Sega Saturn RPG, later localised by Working Designs — one of the few Saturn games officially released in North America in its era.
Magic Knight Rayearth is frequently cited as a proto-isekai: ordinary Japanese schoolgirls pulled into a fantasy world with a game-like structure of quests, level progression and summonable guardians, years before that framing became a dominant commercial genre. Its fusion of shojo art and emotional storytelling with mecha and RPG mechanics was unusual for its time and influential well beyond magical-girl circles. Kodansha has long published the manga in English.
Why now
The revival is part of a broader wave of CLAMP catalogue activity — the group marked its 35th anniversary in 2024, and Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsubasa and other titles have all seen renewed animation or manga continuations in recent years. A modern Rayearth with a marquee composer and a top-tier cast is the most prominent entry yet.
Where to watch
Ani-One Asia — Medialink’s anime channel and streaming brand — announced the license via its Facebook page and will stream the series across its territories as it airs in Japan. A North American or European streaming partner has not yet been announced.
