Behind the scenes, the project is helmed by veteran director Mitsuo Fukuda, who also co‑wrote the script alongside the late Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita. The original concept is credited to the famed collective Hajime Yatate and series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, both of whom are linked to the franchise’s foundational works.

Character designs return to the sleek aesthetic crafted by Hisashi Hirai, the artist behind the original Gundam Seed series. Mechanical design responsibilities are shared among a veteran team that includes Kunio Ōkawara, Kimitoshi Yamane, Manabu Shintani, zenseava and Takuya Io. The production also lists seasoned staff for color design, art direction, CG supervision and sound, underscoring Sunrise’s commitment to maintaining the franchise’s high production values.

During the livestream, Fukuda, producer Hisakazu Naka, and voice actor Sōichirō Hoshi took the stage to discuss the prequel’s development history. They revealed that the script for Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO was completed two decades ago, and that the storyboards were nearly half‑finished at that time—some even predate the storyboards for the original Gundam Seed FREEDOM film.

Originally envisioned as an original video anime (OVA) in the early 2000s, the project’s final format remains undecided, though the recent trailer suggests a theatrical presentation. The dialogue recording has already been wrapped, indicating that the film is well into post‑production.

The original Gundam Seed FREEDOM premiered in Japan in January 2024, shattering franchise records with a three‑day box‑office total of over ¥1 billion (approximately US$7.2 million) and selling more than 634,000 tickets. The success led to a limited theatrical run in North America via Bandai Namco Filmworks and Fathom Events in May 2024, followed by a streaming debut on Netflix.

Special edition screenings of the original film took place in Japan during the autumn of 2024, featuring added footage and a teaser that hinted at the upcoming prequel. Fans can expect similar treatment for Freedom Zero, though exact details on alternate cuts have not yet been disclosed.
