Gundam Seed Freedom Zero Drops Trailer and Sets 2027 Theatrical Dates

Sunrise has unveiled the first official teaser for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom Zero, the long‑awaited prequel to the 2024 blockbuster Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom. The short video, labelled as the “international version” teaser, gives fans a fresh look at the film’s mecha designs and hints at the political intrigue that will drive the story.

Release Schedule Confirmed

Accompanying the visual reveal, the studio announced that the film will open in Japanese cinemas on January 15, 2027. The North American theatrical window follows shortly thereafter, slated for February 2027. This marks the first time a Gundam CE (Cosmic Era) film will receive a wide theatrical release in the United States after the success of its predecessor.

Story Premise

Set in C.E. 74, the plot picks up after the collapse of the Destiny Plan—a genetically‑driven system that attempted to predetermine human fate. With the plan dismantled, Cagalli Yula Athha, the leader of the Orb United Emirates, works to cement a new era of peace by establishing a global monitoring agency known as COMPS (pronounced “Compass”).

While the great war has officially ended, the film follows Shinn Asuka, who remains uncertain about his future path. A mysterious transfer of a battle‑scarred mobile suit from ZAFT to COMPS’s temporary base on Onogoro Island sets the stage for a fresh conflict. The night the transfer occurs, the Strike Freedom Gundam disappears under unknown circumstances, prompting Shinn and his allies to spring into action once more to retrieve the stolen machine and protect what remains of their fragile peace.

From OVA Concept to Full‑Scale Film

Originally conceived as an original video animation (OVA) two decades ago, Gundam Seed Freedom Zero was written and partially storyboarded back then. The project lay dormant until the unprecedented box‑office performance of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom, which earned roughly ¥5 billion (about US$31.6 million) in Japan, breathed new life into the prequel. The financial success convinced Sunrise to expand the OVA into a full theatrical feature, ensuring the story would finally reach the big screen.

Creative Team and Cast

The film retains much of the core staff from its predecessor. Mitsuo Fukuda returns as director, while the script is a collaboration between newcomer Shigeru Morita and the late Chiaki Morosawa, who also co‑writes alongside Fukuda. Character designer Hisashi Hirai and mechanical designer legends Kunio Okawara, Kimitoshi Yamane, Manabu Shintani, zenseava, and Takuya Io shape the visual identity of the new mobile suits.

Voice talent includes Kenichi Suzumura as Shinn Asuka, Maaya Sakamoto as Lunamaria Hawke, Houko Kuwashima as Agnes Giebenrath, and Daisuke Ono as Leonard Valway. Returning veterans Soichiro Hoshi (Kira Yamato), Rie Tanaka (Lacus Clyne), Akira Ishida (Athrun Zala), Nanako Mori (Cagalli Yula Athha), and others round out a cast that bridges the original series with the new narrative.
