Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising, the direct sequel to the franchise’s Rebellion film, debuted atop the Japanese box office with roughly 535,000 tickets sold and about 940 million yen (US$5.95 million) earned over its opening weekend, backed by day-one IMAX screenings. Series veterans including director Yukihiro Miyamoto, writer Gen Urobuchi and studio SHAFT all returned, joined by new cast members Shion Wakayama and Tomoyo Kurosawa.

That pushed the Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island into second place in its sixth week, though the film continues its strong run with a cumulative 8.49 million tickets and roughly $77.5 million earned since its late-July debut; it will add 4DX screenings from September 5 alongside special cheering and penlight event showings later in the month.

Further down the chart, the Crayon Shin-chan franchise’s latest film held at #5 in its fifth weekend with over $16 million banked to date, while the fifth Kingdom live-action film remained at #7 with a cumulative haul above $40 million, and the Blue Lock live-action adaptation dropped out of the top ten entirely in its fourth week.
