Bandai Namco used Sony’s Thursday State of Play broadcast to unveil the “Genesis Maidens” downloadable content pack for Echoes of Aincrad, its action RPG based on Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online novels, confirming a winter launch.
The expansion introduces new story content across Floors 1 and 2 of Aincrad, adds playable character Mito from the Sword Art Online: Progressive films, brings a new curved-sword weapon type, and layers in an armor-enhancement system; vocalist Aimer performs the game’s theme song “Live to Survive.”
Echoes of Aincrad launched in July on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in both Japan and the West, offering Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate and store-exclusive Aincrad editions that scale up with bonus content such as the “Death Game” permadeath mode and a bundled companion anime, Unanswered//butterfly.
Kawahara’s original web novel dates back to 2002, later reworked into Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko print line starting in 2009; the franchise has since grown to 29 main-story volumes alongside numerous spinoffs, anime seasons, films and a long-gestating live-action series.
