The visual and what’s coming

The Season 2 visual depicts the large bridge where Hikaru Gero saved Mei Kinosaki in the first episode; the composition is meant to emphasise the pair’s chemistry as a duo. Hori confirmed that Season 2 production is progressing smoothly and teased that an appealing new marriage prospect appears for Gero, while the relationship between Gero and Kinosaki deepens “through various developments.” Characters from the first season return.

Hori on the adaptation

Hori, whose credits include Carole & Tuesday and Metallic Rouge, said his goal for Season 2 is to carry viewers “from beginning to end with the same energy” despite a demanding production. He reflected on the response at Anime Expo 2026, where he appeared with Haruki Ishiya (Gero) and Shion Wakayama (Kinosaki): “I had thought the content of the source material was very Japanese, so I honestly did not imagine that audiences overseas would take to it so warmly.”

On craft, Hori explained that one of Marriage Toxin‘s defining qualities is how quickly it shifts between comedy, action, emotional drama and darker material — and that rather than treating each genre separately, the production uses music and other connective elements to keep a consistent emotional flow. He said the action was deliberately treated seriously to preserve the contrast between Joumyaku’s absurd comedy and Mizuki Yoda’s polished art.

Series background

Season 1 ran 13 episodes, covering the Water Master, Sound Master and Beast Master arcs. Studio BONES Film (My Hero Academia Final Season, Gachiakuta) returns for animation, with Crunchyroll streaming worldwide. Isohei Tokuoka serves as chief animation director and character designer.

The premise: Hikaru Gero, heir to one of the Five Great Poison Master families, has lived his life in the underworld far from love or marriage. When the family head decrees his sister must produce an heir “by force if necessary,” Hikaru resolves to protect her — and after crossing paths with brilliant marriage swindler Mei Kinosaki, an intended target, he impulsively hires her to help him find a bride. The manga by Joumyaku and Mizuki Yoda runs in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump.
