Just Like Mona Lisa Announces 2027 Premiere with New Trailer and Expanded Cast

The latest main trailer and key visual for the TV anime Just Like Mona Lisa have just been unveiled, confirming a broadcast window sometime in 2027. The promotional video drops a brief glimpse of the ending theme and showcases the series’ distinct aesthetic, while the fresh visual emphasizes the gender‑fluid premise at the heart of the story.

One of the most striking moments in the trailer is a short excerpt of imase’s song “Mayoi wa Hikari,” which will serve as the ending theme for the series. The melody, paired with the series’ soft color palette, hints at a reflective tone that matches the narrative’s exploration of identity and love.

In addition to the visual rollout, the production committee announced an expanded voice‑cast. Returning cast member Chika Anzai continues to voice protagonist Hinase Arima, while newcomers Yoshino Aoyama, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Daisuke Sakuma, Chiharu, Kakeru Hatano, Haruna Mikawa, and Shion Wakayama have been added to the roster. Although the specific characters for the new actors remain under wraps, the breadth of talent suggests a diverse ensemble supporting the series’ thematic depth.

Key staff members have also been confirmed. The series is helmed by director Kana Shundo, known for her work on Apocalypse Hotel, with Koji Matsumura serving as assistant director. Character designs are crafted by Nobuhiro Sugiyama, whose portfolio includes the acclaimed March Comes in Like a Lion. Main animation duties fall to Yoshiaki Ito, while the musical score will be composed by Yuki Hayashi, recognized for his contributions to My Hero Academia. All animation production is being handled by the renowned studio SHAFT.

The series follows Hinase, a gender‑neutral teenager navigating a world where friends and peers have already chosen defined identities. Childhood companions Ritsu and Shiori represent contrasting paths, prompting Hinase—and the audience—to question the nature of love, desire, and personal choice. As classmates and adults grapple with their own uncertainties, the narrative weaves a poignant look at self‑acceptance and societal expectations.

Just Like Mona Lisa adapts the manga created by Tsumuji Yoshimura, which concluded with its tenth volume in 2022 after a run on Square Enix’s GANGAN Online. English readers can find the series under the title The Gender of Mona Lisa on Manga Up!.

Production details were first reported by Anitrendz’s June announcement, which confirmed SHAFT’s involvement, and later reaffirmed by a subsequent article on August’s trailer reveal. The official Twitter account @anime_mona_lisa also shared the trailer clip and visual, sparking excitement among fans.
