The beloved dark‑fantasy series Pandora Hearts is set to make its third theatrical appearance. The new production, titled PandoraHearts Retrace III –Reverse corte-, will run at Tokyo’s Theater H from September 17‑26, 2027, before moving to Osaka’s Sankei Hall Breeze for two performances on October 2‑3.
A short trailer was streamed by the musical’s official account, though it is currently geo‑blocked for viewers in the United States. Fans outside Japan will need to wait for an official international release or a subtitled version.
Returning to the helm is director and screenwriter Akira Yamazaki, who also oversaw the first two stage adaptations. Lyricist Ako Takahashi and composer Harumi Fuuki are back to provide the musical’s vocal and instrumental backbone, promising continuity in the series’ distinctive sound.
The role of the series’ protagonist, Oz Vessalius, will once again be played by Kazan Yokoyama, who first embodied the character in the 2025 production. Yokoyama’s reprisal is expected to bring both familiarity and fresh nuance to the tragic hero’s journey.

The inaugural musical debuted at Theater H in November 2025, receiving praise for its atmospheric set design and faithful adaptation of the manga’s eerie tone. That run set a solid foundation for the upcoming sequel, which aims to explore deeper layers of the story’s mythology.
Created by Jun Mochizawa, Pandora Hearts first appeared in Square Enix’s Monthly G Fantasy magazine in 2006. After a ten‑year run, the manga concluded in 2015 with twenty‑four tankōbon volumes, as reported by Square Enix.
Yen Press holds the English licensing rights for both Pandora Hearts and its spin‑off Crimson‑Shell, as well as the side‑story novel Pandora Hearts: Caucus Race by Shinobu Wakamiya. The English releases have helped sustain the franchise’s popularity outside Japan.
The series also received a 25‑episode anime adaptation produced by Xebec and licensed for North America by NIS America. The anime premiered in 2009, introducing the tragic tale of Oz’s forced exile to the Abyss and his partnership with the mysterious girl Alice to audiences worldwide.
For newcomers, Yen Press describes the narrative as follows: the celebration of fifteen‑year‑old Oz Vessalius’s coming‑of‑age ceremony swiftly turns to horror when he is condemned for an unknown sin and cast into the endless prison known as the Abyss. There, he meets Alice, a girl whose true nature is shrouded in mystery, setting in motion a chain of events that intertwine destiny, despair, and the faint hope of redemption.
While Pandora Hearts remains the centerpiece, creator Mochizuki also launched The Case Study of Vanitas in 2015, a separate dark fantasy that continues to expand his reputation for intricate world‑building. The ongoing success of his works underscores why the musical adaptations attract such eager anticipation.
Fans can find more details on the official musical site Pandora Hearts Musicals’ website. As the third installment approaches, audiences can expect a blend of haunting visuals, dramatic music, and the timeless themes that have defined the franchise for over a decade.
