After a brief but problematic run in late August, GKIDS announced that the critically‑acclaimed animated film The Last Blossom will be screened again on October 13 in U.S. theaters. The new showings will feature a fully corrected English subtitle track, fixing the timing errors that forced refunds and cancellations during the initial weekend.
What Went Wrong in August
The film was originally slated for a two‑day theatrical window on August 30‑31, as detailed on GKIDS’ own announcement. Shortly after the first screening, audience members reported that the English subtitles lagged several seconds behind the dialogue, disrupting the viewing experience. Some theaters were forced to cancel the second‑day shows while GKIDS worked on a fix.
GKIDS responded publicly, explaining the issue and outlining its remediation plan. In the statement, the distributor said: “On Sunday [August 30], GKIDS became aware of a subtitling glitch in our DCP for The Last Blossom. We immediately instructed theaters to remove shows from sale and issue refunds to affected customers until we could identify and resolve the issue.” The company added that a corrected digital cinema package (DCP) was delivered on Monday, but not all venues could update in time, resulting in the lost screenings. The full statement can be read on GKIDS’ Bluesky account and was covered by Anime News Network.
Makeup Screening Plans
Following the investigation, GKIDS said it was reviewing options for “makeup screenings of the corrected version” to give audiences the chance to experience the film as intended. The upcoming October 13 date serves as that makeup opportunity, allowing fans who missed out—or who were dissatisfied with the subtitle timing—to finally see the movie properly.
About The Last Blossom
The film follows former yakuza Minoru Akutsu, portrayed in his youth by Kaoru Kobayashi and in his present by Junki Tozuka, as he confronts his past from a prison cell on the verge of death. His only companion is a sardonic, talking flower that grows out of a can, voiced by Pierre Taki. The narrative weaves themes of regret, love, and the possibility of redemption.
Key creative staff include director Baku Kinoshita, scriptwriter and original concept creator Kazuya Konomoto, and animation studio CLAP, known for works such as Pompo: The Cinéphile and The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes. Concept art was provided by Michinoku‑Toge (profile), while the band cero composed the score and performed the ending theme “Moving Still Life,” announced in a trailer earlier this year.
The voice cast also includes Hikari Mitsushima and Yoshiko Miyazaki, who portray Akutsu’s partner Nana Nagata at different ages (Mitsushima, Miyazaki). The film premiered in Japan in October 2025 and was featured in the Feature Film Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2025, after an earlier work‑in‑progress screening at the same event.
